Tile Installation in Houston, TX
Beaumont Formation clay lifts and drops slab edges across every Houston season, and that movement is what splits grout lines. Every floor and shower we set starts on an uncoupling membrane, so the assembly absorbs the shift instead of the surface.
- Uncoupling membrane under every assembly
- Waterproofing detailed before a single tile
- Existing layout kept, slab intact

Porcelain floor tile runs $12 to $22 per square foot installed, dropping toward $7 to $15 on open-floor volume work and climbing near $30 for herringbone or stone.
Slab movement cracks it: smectitic Beaumont clay swells when saturated and contracts in drought, lifting slab edges differentially and transferring that stress straight into the grout.
Not for the tile itself, which Houston treats as exempt finish work, though relocating plumbing or electrical fixtures requires a permit from each trade involved.
Why Houston Is Different
Why Houston Tile Fails, and What Prevents It
Tile rarely fails here because of the tile. It fails because the ground under the slab travels several times a year, and because Gulf humidity punishes any assembly that was waterproofed casually. Both conditions are predictable, which means both can be detailed around.
Smectitic Clay Under the Slab
The Beaumont Formation beneath most of this metro is smectitic clay with very high shrink-swell capacity. Saturate it through a wet spring and it expands; hold it through an August drought and it contracts, raising and dropping slab edges differentially inside a single year. Tile is rigid and grout is more rigid still, so an assembly set straight against the slab telegraphs that seasonal travel upward and splits grout in long straight runs across a room. An uncoupling membrane separates slab from tile, letting the movement dissipate below the finish where nobody sees it.
Waterproofing Is a Line Item, Not a Detail
Gulf humidity shortens the life of any shower that was sealed by approximation. Poorly detailed assemblies in Houston fail inside three to five years, almost always at the curb, the inside corners, and the drain flange where movement concentrates. That is why waterproofing accounts for 15 to 25 percent of a bathroom budget here instead of disappearing into labor; membrane alone runs $1,200 to $1,945. We sheet the pan and walls, hold water in the pan overnight, and only then set tile, because a weak corner discovered after grout stops being a leak and becomes a demolition.
Keeping the Layout Keeps the Budget
Slab-on-grade construction makes plumbing relocation the most expensive decision on a tile project. Each fixture moved means cutting and patching concrete at $1,500 to $5,000 per penetration before any material is ordered. Inner Loop homes in Montrose, the Heights, and Upper Kirby already run 15 to 25 percent above the metro average on aging supply lines and tighter oversight, and galvanized pipe replacement can add $10,000 to $20,000 on its own. Holding the existing drain and valve positions is usually the single largest saving available on a bathroom, and it almost never costs anything in function.

Typical Tile Installation Scopes in Houston
Expect $12 to $22 per square foot installed on porcelain floor tile in Houston, with open-floor volume work landing closer to $7 to $15. Spread comes from substrate prep, membrane coverage, pattern complexity, and whether waterproofing sits inside the scope.
Open-Floor Porcelain
Membrane across a continuous 900-foot field
Living, dining, hallway, and kitchen taken down to slab, floated flat, then membraned as one continuous field. Movement joints landed at the room transitions rather than mid-run, where they would have been visible.
| Rooms | Living, dining, hallway, kitchen |
| Duration | 6 - 9 days |
| Lead time | 2 - 3 weeks |
| Products | Modified thin-set, uncoupling membrane, stain-resistant polymer grout, Schluter metal edge protection |
Walk-In Shower Rebuild
Flood tested before tile
Full rip-and-replace on a primary bath with the drain and valve left in place. Waterproof backer board and sheet membrane carried across pan, curb, and walls, with the pan held overnight before setting started.
| Rooms | Primary bathroom |
| Duration | 2 - 3 weeks |
| Lead time | 3 - 4 weeks |
| Products | Waterproof backer board, waterproofing membrane, uncoupling membrane, polymer grout |
Stone Entry and Powder Bath
Herringbone over a flood-zone slab
Natural stone set in herringbone at the entry, with raised detailing and water-safe setting materials appropriate to the flood zone. Pattern cut waste and layout time drove the per-foot figure well above a straight-lay floor.
| Rooms | Entry, powder bath |
| Duration | 5 - 8 days |
| Lead time | 2 - 3 weeks |
| Products | Natural stone, modified thin-set, uncoupling membrane, Schluter metal edge protection |
Site Conditions
What You Are Tiling Over
Substrate decides the assembly. These are the conditions we meet most often across the metro and what each one changes about the build.
| Condition | Where you see it in Houston | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Slab-on-grade concrete | Most postwar subdivisions citywide | Uncoupling membrane across the full field, no exceptions |
| Active surface fault trace | Scattered across 300-plus metro traces | Movement joint placed on the trace line, perimeter left free |
| Flood-zone slab | Meyerland, Westbury, Clear Lake City | Raised install detailing and water-safe setting materials, 5 to 15 percent more |
| Pier-and-beam plywood deck | The Heights, Montrose, Riverside Terrace | Deflection stiffened, backer board added, membrane over the top |
| Shower pan and curb | Any bathroom scope, citywide | Sheet membrane, sloped base, overnight flood test before tile |
| Hard-water service area | Katy and the western suburbs | Glass and fixture selection weighted toward scale resistance |

Process
How the Work Runs
- 1Measure and read the slab. Flatness, moisture, and existing crack patterns get checked before anything is priced. A line of cracking tells us more about scope than square footage does.
- 2Scope set in writing. Tile, pattern, membrane coverage, and waterproofing extent are fixed before material is ordered. Anything that would require a slab penetration is flagged and priced on its own.
- 3Demolition and prep. Old finish comes out, the substrate is cleaned, and low spots are floated flat. Demolition labor runs $40 to $70 per hour, so this phase is scheduled tight.
- 4Waterproofing and flood test. Wet areas receive waterproof backer board and sheet membrane across pan, curb, and walls. The pan holds water overnight before tile is allowed anywhere near it.
- 5Membrane, then tile. Uncoupling membrane is set over the full field in modified thin-set and tile is set to it. Movement joints land where the assembly needs them, including over any fault trace.
- 6Grout, trim, walkthrough. Stain-resistant polymer grout follows cure, with Schluter metal edge protection at every exposed transition. We walk the finished work with you under raking light before invoicing.
Coverage
Houston Areas We Tile
Coverage runs from the Inner Loop out through the west and southwest. What shifts the number is slab condition and district rules.
Our Services
Specialized Services in Houston
Tile work rarely finishes a room by itself. These trades run on the same Houston schedule and get sequenced around the tile rather than after it.
Handyman Services
Punch-list work across the same footprint, from door clearances to fixture swaps. Convenient for bundling the small items a tile crew tends to uncover mid-project.
Drywall Installation
Tile demolition almost always opens a wall somewhere. We replace the affected wall plane and finish it so the transition into new tile reads clean.
Painting Services
New tile makes tired trim obvious. Baseboard, casing, and wall repainting follow the setting work so the room finishes as one piece.
Flooring Installation
Not every room wants tile. Engineered wood, luxury vinyl, and laminate get the same substrate attention, since slab movement is the real variable either way.
Fence Installation
Houston clay moves posts the same way it moves slabs. Fence work here uses deeper footings and spacing set for seasonal shrink-swell.
Common Questions
Tile Installation Questions, Answered
Why does my grout crack in straight lines?
Because the slab beneath it is moving. Beaumont clay swells and contracts seasonally, and without an uncoupling membrane that travel transfers into the grout along the stiffest path across the room.
Do I need a permit for a tile floor?
No. Houston permitting is trigger-based and tile is exempt finish work. Replace a plumbing or electrical fixture, though, and each trade pulls its own permit, with minimums near $91 building and $97 plumbing.
How long does a tile shower take?
Plan two to four weeks on a rip-and-replace. Demolition takes one to three days, rough-in three to seven, waterproofing and inspection one to three, tile and cure three to ten, then fixtures and finishing.
What is your project minimum?
$500. Below that, mobilization, material pickup, and setup consume the job, so small repairs are better bundled with other work at the same address.
Why do Inner Loop projects cost more?
Montrose, the Heights, and Upper Kirby run 15 to 25 percent above the Houston average. Aging supply lines, stricter oversight, and historic-district rules on street-facing changes all add scope.
Can you tile over my existing floor?
Sometimes, where the existing surface is sound, flat, and tight to the slab. More often removal is the right call, since demolition at $40 to $70 per hour costs less than a failed assembly.
Is moving the shower drain worth it?
Rarely. Slab penetration runs $1,500 to $5,000 per fixture relocated, the largest scope-creep item on any Houston bathroom, and the original layout usually works once the tile changes.
What does tile labor cost per hour here?
Expert tile setters bill $60 to $100 hourly in Houston and demolition labor $40 to $70, with labor landing at 30 to 50 percent of total budget. Trade rates rose 4 to 6 percent this past year.
How We Build It
Slab Read Before Quote
Every estimate opens with a flatness check and a look at existing crack patterns. Where cracking follows a line, we assume a fault trace or differential edge movement and detail for it.
Uncoupling as Standard
An uncoupling membrane goes under every floor and shower field we set, including the ones with no visible trouble. It enters the scope before tile selection begins.
Flood Test Before Tile
Shower waterproofing is sheeted, sealed, and held with water before a single piece goes on the wall. Finding a weak corner at that stage costs an afternoon instead of a demolition.
Layout Held Where Possible
Drain and valve positions stay put unless function genuinely demands otherwise. That one decision keeps slab penetration out of the budget and keeps the schedule honest.
